John Melvin Angione has been involved in hockey and soccer in New Waterford as an athlete and a coach at various levels.
Frank MacKenzie ranks as one of New Waterford's longest and most successful coaches. His impressive coaching career began in 1961 in Toronto, and he continued his legacy through his time at Breton Education Centre and the University College of Cape Breton.
Mike "Bat" Cameron began playing darts at age 13. At age 18, he won his first league championship. His successes continued and he has since captured multiple titles in Cape Breton and the Maritimes.
Cheryl Angione excelled in basketball and track and field. At the time, she held multiple provincial records in the Nova Scotia Headmasters Track and Field championships. She competed in many track events but excelled as a gifted and speedy runner. Cheryl will be inducted into the New Waterford & District Sports Heritage Hall of Fame this summer.
After an outstanding year, the 1984 New Waterford Dodgers captured the Atlantic Intermediate 'A' Baseball Championship. After a 10-3 win over Louisdale in the provincial final, the team went to the Atlantic Championships, finishing with a record of 31 hits in four games.
The 1974 Breton Education Centre Girl's Soccer team was the first team to win a girls' sports championship at BEC and the first Nova Scotia girl's soccer championship captured by a high school in Cape Breton. After an undefeated season, the provincial final was captured with a 2-0 victory.
