2014 Inductees

Athlete: Baseball, Hockey, Boxing, Rugby, Track

Charlie Pyle was a tremendous New Waterford athlete who excelled in baseball, hockey, boxing, rugby, and track and field. He set numerous track and field records while in the armed services. Charlie also played in the famous Halifax and District Baseball League. He was also a member of the New Waterford Strands, winners of the Cape Breton Senior Hockey Championship in 1946, defeating the famed Sydney Millionaires in the final game before 4,000 fans at the Sydney Forum. This game, which New Waterford won by a score of 5 to 4, took an extra 96 minutes of overtime to settle, marking it as the longest game in Canadian amateur hockey history to that point. 

Athlete: Basketball, Fastball, Track & Field

Don MacAulay was one of New Waterford's finest natural athletes. While at Central High School, Donnie starred in Track and Field, Soccer, and Basketball. He held the provincial high school record in discus and was a member of the 1961 Canadian Juvenile Championship Team. As a high scoring forward who featured a deadly bank shot, Donnie was a key member of the New Waterford Strands, winners of numerous Maritime Intermediate Championships. He is fondly remembered for his clutch performance in the championship series leading to the Maritime Senior Basketball Championship for the Strands in 1970. Donnie was also an outstanding Fastball player and was a key member of the Scotchtown Raiders winners of several Maritime Championships.

George Hughes was a great all-around athlete excelling in soccer, basketball, fastball, and baseball. He was a member of the Central High Juvenile Basketball Team winners of the Canadian Championship in 1961. George was a member of the New Waterford Giants team that won the Maritime Senior Baseball Championship in 1965.

The starry middle infielder and pitcher was also a member of Nova Scotia's Provincial Baseball team at the National Championships. George also won the batting title of the Mainland Fastball League while performing for the Halifax Keiths. George was an outstanding collegiate basketball player at Dalhousie University. He holds several Dal scoring records and was a member of the Canadian National Basketball Team in 1969.

Athlete: Baseball, Basketball, Golf

Billy Burns was a star performer in baseball, basketball, soccer, and golf. As a baseball player, Billy was a standout with minor teams in New Waterford and was a member of two Nova Scotia Juvenile Championship teams. Billy finished out his baseball career as an outstanding catcher with the Sydney Sooners of the Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League. As a versatile hard-nosed guard, Billy was the Captain and key member of the Dalhousie Tigers in the mid-seventies. He concluded his basketball career at UCCB winning the Athlete of the Year and leading the basketball squad to the provincial championship. Billy was also an outstanding golfer winning several local and provincial tiles and is considered by many as the best golfer to come out of New Waterford.

Gary McDonald was a great all-around athlete excelling in soccer, basketball, fastball, and baseball. He was a member of three Nova Scotia Championships while at Mt. Carmel High, two in soccer and one in basketball. Gary starred in basketball and soccer at Xavier college and was a key member of the NS College Basketball Championship team in 1969. Gary also played several seasons with the powerful, New Waterford Strands basketball team. Gary was an outstanding baseball player winning championships with the Sydney Steel Kings and the Sydney Sooners. As a hard-hitting, slick-fielding shortstop, Gary reached all-star status in the NS Senior League.

He was also the starting shortstop with the Sydney Steel Kings when they won a silver medal at the Canadian Senior Baseball Championships in Saskatchewan in 1974. Gary was also a member of the New Waterford Hi-Fi Hawks winners of the 1976 NS Intermediate Fastball Championship.
