2019 Inductees

Father Albert MacPherson was an outstanding middle distance runner. He attended Catholic University of America and was a member of their starry relay team, which was the university's first NCAA All-American team. Albert ran third on the mile relay team as it finished third in the NCAA championship meet at Cobo Hall in Detroit in 1969. Shortly after, Albert declined an invitation to train with the Canadian National team in Toronto in order to pursue his religious studies. In 1990, Father Albert was inducted into the Catholic University Hall of Fame. As a student at Mount Carmel High School, Albert was a fixture on the Nova Scotia Track & Field circuit, winning events at the Antigonish Highland Games and the Acadia Relays. John MacLellan was one of the finest dart shooters in the province,during his playing career. In the Mens Classification, John was a member of 5 championship teams. He helped his teams capture 3 Nova Scotia Titles, 1 Maritime Open and 1 Atlantic Open. In 1984, John and his wife, Marie, teamed up to capture the Nova Scotia Mixed Championship. John was an outstanding promoter of darts, organizing tournaments throughout the province. Locally, John was recognized as the key person in organizing dart leagues and tournaments. He has made a very significant contribution to the growth of Darts in Cape Breton. Jack MacKenzie was without doubt, the architect of the most powerful basketball program in Nova Scotia. During the 1940's and 50's, the Strand basketball program under Jack's tutledge, won numerous Provincial titles, in all levels of men's and ladies basketball. Jack's greatest coaching feat was coaching the Senior Mens Strands to the Canadian Title during the the 1946-47 season. Hired by Mount Carmel Parish, Jack organized a comprehensive House League program to develop a feeder system for his senior teams.The Strand Gym became the focal point for the town's recreational activities. Kenny Timmons Sr. was an accomplished coach and organizer in the New waterford area for over forty years. Kenny's name is synonymous with powerhouse Scotchtown Raiders, winners of 4 Nova Scotia & Maritime Fastball Championships. Kenny was also the Assistant Coach of the New Waterford Giants, winners of the 1959 & 65 Maritime Senior Baseball Championships. Kenny was also a key organizer for the very successful New Wateford Floor Hockey League. Wendell MacGibbon is one of Nova Scotia's most accomplished soccer coaches. He led the Breton Education Centre Boys to three Nova Scotia High School Championships. Wendell's extensive coaching career included stints as coach at CBU and Senior Mens and Ladies soccer. Mickey MacKinnon was one of Cape Breton's finest harness racing drivers. He accumulated 996 wins during his impressive career. In 1958, Mickey had his first win with "June Prince". He had over a fifty year association with the Getto stables.He also drove two of Harry Hirsch's finest horses: Queens Newton and Morgan Chief. On July 4, 1996, Tartan Downs had a tribute night to celebrate Mickey's phenomenal career.
